Experience and Specialism

With over two decades of dedicated commitment to Veterinary Public Health, I bring a wealth of experience and insights that have been honed through over 20 years of passionate pursuit. From humble beginnings to lecturing in prestigious international universities and running my own business, my journey has been defined by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a steadfast dedication to the key principles and values of a veterinary public health practitioner revolving around safeguarding public health, promoting animal welfare, and ensuring the sustainability of the environment. Here are some defining principles and values:

  • Public Health Advocacy: I am committed to protecting and promoting the health and well-being of communities by preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases (those transmitted between animals and humans) and other public health threats.
  • One Health Approach: I recognise the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health and advocate for collaborative efforts across disciplines to address complex health challenges. To this end, I hold an MSc on this discipline.
  • Animal Welfare: I uphold principles of compassion, care, and ethical treatment of animals, ensuring their health and welfare are prioritised in all aspects of public health interventions and policies. I hold a diploma on Forensic Medicine Science.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: I produce and rely on scientific evidence, research, and data-driven approaches to inform decision-making, policy development, and public health interventions.
  • Preventive Medicine: I emphasise proactive measures such as vaccination programs, disease surveillance, and biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of diseases and mitigate health risks.
  • Environmental Sustainability: I recognise the impact of human activities on the environment and advocate for sustainable practices that protect natural resources, biodiversity, and ecosystem health. I'm the lead in the development of Sustainability Practices within the Veterinarian Education within VetSustain.
  • Education and Outreach: I am committed to raising awareness, educating stakeholders, and empowering communities to adopt practices that promote health, safety, and sustainability. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
  • Ethical Conduct: I adhere to professional ethics, integrity, and transparency in my interactions with clients, colleagues, and the public, maintaining trust and credibility in my work.
Overall, as a veterinary public health practitioner, I operate at the intersection of veterinary medicine, public health, and environmental science, guided by principles of collaboration, compassion, evidence-based practice, and a commitment to protecting the health of people, animals, and the environment.

. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of

  • Training generations of vets during their undergraduate and postgraduate endeavours. In the UK particularly, many of the vets working in public health capacities such as Official Vets working for the Food Standards Agency, Food Standards Scotland, APHA at MSc level, Official Vets in Northern Ireland (DAERA), Environmental Health Officers and many more
  • Working with the authorities in expert capacities including auditing, enforcement, and legal matters.
  • Working hands-on with the food industry for over 20 years, giving me a practical understanding of their needs.
  • Producing scientific work that has directly impacted national policy and moved European legislation forward.
  • Producing novel educational resources validated by RCVS and utilised by world-leading institutions.

In essence, being able to translate an aspiration into a reality through my dedication to the public, animals and the environment.
